Internet Privacy Concerns Are Growing
The New York Times has published the results of an online privacy survey, where 90 percent of respondents called online privacy a really important or somewhat important issue. 75 percent of respondents agreed that “The Internet is not well regulated, and naïve users can easily be taken advantage of.”
This study comes hot on the heels of this week’s statement by Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, who warned that Web surfers are at increasing risk from governments and corporations who are tracking their web surfing activities to build up detailed pictures of their activities.
I will be speaking on two privacy-related panels in April 2009 at the RSA 2009 Security Conference. I’ll talk about some actual tracking and targeting risks, as well as some technologies to help protect consumers and business users.
